14 Days Hiking and Canoe Trip, combined with two Wilderness Lodges
This extensive journey features the offerings of two wilderness lodges in Canada’s Yukon and their varied surroundings. Both are situated on large mountain lakes with breathtaking scenery. The fact there is no road access to these places guarantees a true wilderness trip complete with your own cabin. The Wilderness Lodge at Tagish is the starting point for the trip who includes several days of hiking in the Jubilee Mountains. Mostly above treeline you have a good chance of seeing wildlife. Then you’ll travel by floatplane to the Frances Lake Wilderness Lodge, where your canoe adventure begins. You’ll experience the seldom-paddled Yusezyu River from McPherson Lake to Frances Lake. At both lodges you will enjoy the highlights of the region and the warm care of our friendly staff.
Day  Itinerary
01
Individual arrival in Whitehorse. We will pick you up at the airport and drive with our bus along the scenic Alaska and Klondike Highway to Tagish. During the 1,5 hour drive we’ll stop at Emerald Lake and the Carcross Desert. From the small village of Tagish we continue another hour by boat to the Wilderness Lodge. Here you will be welcomed by the friendly lodge owners and guided to your cozy cabin.
02 - 04
After a hearty breakfast we will prepare for the three-day hiking trip which begins right behind the lodge. It won’t take us long to climb up above the treeline where we will enjoy the beautiful scenery above Tagish Lake. On the first day we hike for three to four hours and then camp at the foot of the Jubilee Mountains. The following days we explore the plateau around our camp where we may see caribou, marmots, bears and eagles. The daily hikes will vary between three to five hours on more or less level terrain. Thereafter we return to the lodge and enjoy their amenities.
05
Today we’ll take a boat trip to Talaha Bay in British Columbia. Most probably we’ll see moose, otter and beaver. A short hike takes us to the base of Mount Clouthier - or to the hidden lakes.
06
After lunch the bush pilot will land his floatplane in front of the lodge and pick you up for the flight to the Wilderness Lodge at Frances Lake. This flight is one of the highlights of the whole tour. Like a bird you will see endless forests, meandering rivers and countless lakes. After a soft landing in the bay in front of the lodge your new hosts will welcome you. Move into your cozy cabin and enjoy a great dinner.
07 - 08
Early in the morning, we will pack up and get ready for the exciting 30-minute flight by floatplane to McPherson Lake. Here we will camp for two nights on a sandy beach, explore the surroundings of the camp and practice the paddling strokes you will need to know to canoe the river safely. From this camp site we usually can watch moose, caribou, trumpeter swans and bald eagles.
09 - 10
Well-versed in the use of our canoes, we will begin our trip down the Yusezyu River. This river is exciting, but without the dangers of a larger and faster river. Nevertheless, we will have to look out for sweepers, rocks and shallow spots. On a gravel bar along the river we will pitch our tents for the night and try our luck fishing for grayling. The lower section of the river is slower and the chances for seeing moose, beavers and waterfowl are good. The last night of our canoe trip we will spend on a Riviera-style beach at the north end of Frances Lake.
11
A short two hour paddle across the most northern part of the lake and down a connecting river will bring us to the prearranged meeting point were we will be picked up by the lodge boat. In about an hour we will arrive back to the Wilderness Lodge. Here you'll be assigned to your cabin and be able to enjoy the comforts of a shower, sauna and a soft bed - not to forget the great home cooked meals served in the main lodge!
12 - 13
You'll enjoy two more days at Frances Lake to do whatever you like. You may participate in the guided excursions offered, or just fish, photograph, hike, swim in the lake or read a book from the library. You may also visit the Hudson’s Bay Company’s very first trading post in the Yukon.
14
Unfortunately you'll have to leave this wonderful place. The lodge boat brings you to the boat ramp. From there you will be driven on the famous Campbell and Alaska Highway back to Whitehorse (620km).
