15 Days Big Salmon River Canoe Tour
 Big Salmon River
Welcome to some of the wildest, most remote territory on earth. A tributary of the Yukon River, the Big Salmon begins at mountain-rimmed Quiet Lake. This is one of the Yukon's premier canoe routes, and is home to moose, bear, and the large Chinook salmon for which the river is named. Paddle for days through uninhabited wilderness with a stunning mountain backdrop. Explore sand pillars and arches, abandoned villages, and a restored outpost. This is wild country and the water levels are unpredictable so our route may change depending on conditions. Wind through Quiet, Sandy, and Big Salmon Lakes to the entrance of the Big Salmon River. Pass Caribou Creek and ominously named Scurvy Creek where we can fish for grayling. The river widens, with the beautiful Big Salmon Range rising to the west and Mount St. Cyr in the east. Then we start paddling the mighty Yukon River! There is no paddling experience quite like this one. The swift water carries us through territory where humanity is dwarfed by the vast wilderness. Here, wildlife is abundant and people are scarce.
Day  Itinerary
01
We'll greet you at Whitehorse airport and transfer you to the hotel in downtown location. In the afternoon you have time to explore the many sights and to do the last shopping. Meet the group in the evening where you will discuss the tour routing. Your guide will introduce himself and gives substantial introduction to wilderness rules and canoeing techniques at the beginning and during the tour. You have plenty of time to organize your gear and adapt to the wilderness setting for a very special experience far away from civilization.
02 -11
From Whitehorse we drive 250 km east to our put-in site at Quiet Lake in the beautiful South Canol region of the Yukon. The rest of the day we paddle through Quiet, Sandy and Big Salmon Lake to the entrance of the Big Salmon River where we set up camp for the night. Say good-bye to the lake country and begin the river trip. The fast currents of this river can quickly change to easily passable rapids, or to slower currents. It may be necessary to portage, or line, the canoes around log jams and sweepers. The surrounding mountains, up to 2000 meters high, touch the waters of the endlessly bending river. The riverbanks are entirely overgrown by deep impenetrable brush and forest; however, with some luck we might spot moose, bears, lynx, or even wolves, and we will often catch sight of beavers and bald eagles. The fish you catch can provide variety on the daily menu. Everyone will have the opportunity to learn a few tricks of wilderness survival. We pass Caribou Creek, Gray Creek and the ominously named Scurvy Creek where we set up camp and fish for grayling. As we continue downstream the river twists and turns and widens past Scurvy Creek, with the beautiful Big Salmon Range rising to the west and Mt. St. Cyr and Tower Peak rising to the east. Pace continues with spectacular scenery and exciting paddling. This section is one of the fastest on the river.
12 - 13
After 230 km we start paddling the mighty Yukon River for another 80 km. See an abandoned village, the first evidence of human life in days, at the junction of the Big Salmon and the Yukon. We continue paddling on the Yukon, with its fast water and high banks. There are many sites to see and explore along this stretch including: sand pillars and arches, abandoned villages, and a restored outpost.

We arrive at Carmacks in the morning where our paddle journey ends. The driver awaits us and we are heading back to Whitehorse. On the way we stop at the ruins of Montague Roadhouse which was one of the 52 stopping places between Whitehorse and Dawson City in 1901. Via Twin Lakes - well known for their beauty and colors we stop at Conglomerate Mountain which was formed at the leading edge of volcanic mud flows some 185 million years ago. We will take our time for a good photo opportunity at beautiful Fox Lake and drive along Lake Laberge wich became famous from a poem by Robert W. Service. We arrive in Whitehorse where we stay for the night. Guests who have booked the program extension will continue on to Kathleen Lake.
